For years, buyers priced out of Raleigh, Cary, and Apex have been looking east — and discovering that the towns along the US-64 and US-264 corridors offer something increasingly rare in the Triangle: space, value, and a real sense of community, all within commuting distance of the region's jobs. Here's an honest, local look at the towns east of Raleigh.
Why buyers are heading east
The math is simple. Eastern Wake County towns like Zebulon typically offer larger lots and newer homes at prices well below the county average, while keeping you connected to downtown Raleigh, Research Triangle Park, and Wake Med and Duke health systems. Add in new construction, expanding retail, and small-town charm, and it's easy to see the appeal.
Zebulon
Best for: value seekers, first-time buyers, and anyone who wants small-town character with room to grow.
Our home base. Zebulon blends a walkable, historic downtown with a wave of new-construction neighborhoods on its edges. It's home to the Carolina Mudcats minor-league ballpark, a growing dining scene, and some of the most attractive price-per-square-foot value in Wake County. With a median sale price of $359,000 over the year to July 2026 — $340,000 for a resale — it remains a genuine bargain by Triangle standards.
Wendell
Best for: buyers who want new construction and master-planned community amenities.
Just west of Zebulon, Wendell has exploded in popularity thanks to large master-planned communities like Wendell Falls, with resort-style pools, trails, and a town-center feel. It offers brand-new homes and community amenities at prices below Raleigh, while shaving a few minutes off the commute.
Knightdale
Best for: commuters who want to be closest to Raleigh.
Knightdale is the closest of the eastern towns to downtown Raleigh — often a 20-minute drive — thanks to direct access via the I-540/US-64 corridor. Knightdale Station Park and a steady stream of new retail and townhomes sit alongside the shortest commute of the eastern Wake towns.
Wake Forest, Rolesville & Garner
- Wake Forest — to the north, known for its beautifully preserved historic downtown, strong schools, and a mix of established and new neighborhoods.
- Rolesville — one of the area's smaller, fast-growing towns, offering newer homes and a tight-knit, small-town feel.
- Garner — to the south, a well-established community with easy access to Raleigh, White Deer Park, and excellent value.
Every one of these towns has micro-markets — the right neighborhood depends on your commute, budget, and lifestyle. That's where local, street-level knowledge matters. Tell us your priorities and we'll point you to the best fit.
How to choose the right town for you
When we help buyers weigh their options, we focus on a few practical questions:
- Commute: Where do you (and your household) need to be on a typical weekday, and what's your tolerance for drive time?
- Home type: Do you want brand-new with amenities, or more land and character?
- Budget: How far does your budget stretch in each town? The differences can be significant.
- Lifestyle: Walkable downtown, master-planned community, or quiet acreage?
There's no single "best" town — only the best one for you. If you're just getting started, our first-time buyer's guide and current listings are a great next stop.
