You have found the house. You have checked the school. Then somebody mentions your child will be on "Track 3" and off for three weeks in October, and you realise you have no idea what you just agreed to. This is the single most common surprise for families moving into Wake County from out of state, and it is entirely avoidable if you know what to ask before you buy.
Wake County schools run on more than one calendar. A year-round school teaches the same number of days as a traditional one — it just spreads them out, trading the long summer for shorter breaks scattered through the year. It is not more school. It is the same school, differently arranged.
The version that catches people out is multi-track, where your child belongs to one of four groups and takes their breaks when their group does — which may be nothing like when your neighbour's children are off.

Most people hear "year-round" and picture the middle row. The bottom row is the one that reshapes a family's year, and the two get talked about as if they were the same thing. They are not.
The student body is split into four tracks. Three are in class at any moment; the fourth is on a three-week break. Then they rotate, all year.
The reason is arithmetic, not pedagogy. If a quarter of your students are always away, the building holds meaningfully more children than its classroom count suggests. For a county adding rooftops faster than classrooms, that is an extremely useful trick — and it is why new schools in high-growth corridors often open on this calendar. Hilltop Needmore Elementary in Fuquay-Varina opened in July 2026 as a multi-track year-round school for exactly this reason.
The part to check before you buy: not just whether the school is year-round, but whether it is multi-track, and if so, how tracks are assigned and whether siblings can be placed together. Those are three separate questions and the answer to the first does not tell you the other two.
Nobody warns buyers about the logistics, so here they are plainly.
There is a live example of how fluid this is. In May 2026, the Wake County school board approved moving eight year-round campuses off the multi-track system to single-track year-round. They stay year-round; what goes away is the four-track rotation, so every student at those schools will be in class at the same time as every other.
The reason is worth understanding, because it cuts against the usual growth story: those eight schools are not projected to enrol as many students as the flexible calendar was designed to accommodate. Multi-track exists to squeeze extra capacity out of a building. When the projected students do not arrive, the complexity is buying you nothing, so it goes.
Confirmed among the eight are Pleasant Grove Elementary in Cary and Sycamore Creek Elementary in Raleigh, with campuses in the Holly Springs and Holly Grove area also in the group. Reporting at the time did not publish a complete list, so check the district directly for the full set rather than relying on any summary, including this one.
Timing: the change takes effect in 2027-28 for all of them except Sycamore Creek, which moves in 2028-29.

You are not stuck with whatever your address hands you. Every Wake County student is assigned two schools: the base school tied to your address, and a calendar option school on the opposite calendar. Base school year-round means your option is traditional; base traditional means your option is year-round.
